Is it possible for herbal medications targeting mood to increase your depression?
I'm currently on Lamictal and Xanax. I just recently began taking Seroquel again after a two week stint... I quit 125mg cold turkey. What a nightmare. And also began taking the leftover Wellbutrin I have so I can lose some weight.
Wellbutrin never helped my depression, just made me lose weight which I can't complain about, and before now, I have always had an SSRI backing me up in addition to whatever else I was taking (including Wellbutrin)
Anyways, I was wondering if some supplements, such as SAM-e or NSI Omega-3 Mood Formula would be safe to take without the risk of worsening my depression?
I was also wondering if any of you have taken the supplement (I saw it at Whole Foods) called Relax-O-Zyme? It's supposed to help with anxiety and I'm always looking for alternatives to my Xanax. I've tried the Rescue Pastilles and they're, eh, okay.
The NSI Omega-3 mood formula is likely just Omega-3 fatty acids, in which case it would be perfectly alright to take along with whatever antidepressants you are on. If you were to want to take something like St. John's Wort, I would advise against it because the combination of it and your antidepressants could lead to a dangerous complication called "Serotonin Syndrome" which comes as a result of too much serotonin in your system. I would recommend against taking SAM-e with antidepressants (again due to serotonin syndrome). It can only be done under close doctor supervision.
It isn't all about dietary supplements though, you must also make sure to live a healthy lifestyle and make sure you are getting adequate exercise especially. Simple lifestyle changes can make a big difference. Good luck
